What do you do with a really old beat up quilt?

Cut it up or throw it out. Those were my choices. So, of course, I cut it up. I'm making little quiltie kits with the pieces. Today I started making some samples. They are not finished yet, need a button or two here or there, etc. Or some bits and bobs and beads. But this is how far I got.

I received a picture frame with a little heart shaped piece of quilt glued onto a little poem one year for Christmas from my sister. Our grandmother made quilts and had given each of us one as a wedding present when we were married for our beds. Over 30+ years the quilts wore out and began to fall apart. My sister had taken some of the quilt she had been given from our grandmother, the better parts with patterns on them and put them in frames with a poem about loving hands. She made one for herself and for each of her children and also sent one to me. I still think of my grandmother and my sister whenever I pass that picture frame setting on the end table. What a wonderful present!
Your comments on July 13th reminded me again of that little piece of quilt and the gifts that can be made from old beat up quilts. thank you!
